We know that now is a moment when we’re facing unprecedented challenges and deeply dangerous and damaging policies and language. But it’s also a moment when we’re seeing incredible resistance, love, and hope. Now more than ever is a time to come together to stand up for the state we believe in – a Minnesota where each and every person is able to live in joy – lives that are fulfilling, stable, creative, and happy.

It is in this moment that TakeAction Minnesota is inviting you to join a Believe Resist 2017 Annual Meeting. Join TakeAction and many partners at a meeting on March 18th from 10am to 1pm in Duluth, Grand Rapids, St. Cloud, Willmar, Northfield, or St. Paul. These meetings are a way to be with others who are trying to make meaning of this moment, who are resisting, who are hopeful, and who are ready to fight for a Minnesota and a country where love, joy, and justice prevail.
Meetings are free, food will be provided, and all are kid-friendly. They will include:

  • Meeting and connecting with neighbors and folks from other organizations who want to work for a more just and equitable Minnesota.
  • Trainings to learn more about the work of TakeAction and our partners — learn more about the current and urgent work on healthcare, criminal justice reform, economic justice, climate justice, and the future of caregiving, and skills for resisting and building the world we want to see.
  • A virtual visit from Heather McGee, president of Demos, a public policy organization working for an America where we all have an equal say in our democracy and an equal chance in our economy.
  • Ways to plug into local work for quality healthcare, higher wages, a sustainable future, electing progressives to office and much more!

AFT Responds to Trump’s New Muslim Ban

WASHINGTON— American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten on President Donald Trump’s second executive order banning Muslims:
 
“A repackaged Muslim ban is still a ban against those of one religion. Today’s executive order is still a betrayal of our values, and its discriminatory intent remains intact. As even the Department of Homeland Security has admitted, turning away people based on religion or nationality and creating widespread fear in immigrant communities will only make our country less safe.
“Those of us whose families came here as immigrants or refugees, and helped make America great, have a responsibility to speak out about how contrary this ban is to the values of America.”

AFT Responds to Republican Healthcare Plan
WASHINGTON— Statement of AFT President Randi Weingarten on the Republican healthcare plan: 

“Ripping healthcare away from Americans to give huge tax breaks to the wealthy is about as cruel as it gets. This isn’t a healthcare plan—it’s a massive giveaway to insurance companies and those at the top, while it hits America’s families with a triple whammy of less coverage, higher costs and more taxes. This bill will potentially leave millions without coverage. 

“That Republicans are now trying to ram something through after keeping it under lock and key makes it clear that they want to hide the details and cost from the American people. If something sounds too good to be true, it is. They know that if their true intent were exposed, Americans would soundly reject their efforts.”

AFT Stands with Transgender Student
 
WASHINGTON— Today, the American Federation of Teachers joined the National Education Association, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, the Service Employees International Union and the School Social Work Association of America in submitting an amicus brief on behalf of Gavin Grimm, the transgender student whose case is coming before the Supreme Court.
The amicus brief argues that: discrimination harms transgender students by stigmatizing them and denying them equal educational opportunities; school policies that respect trans students create a positive climate for all students; Title IX protects trans students, because discrimination against them is gender-based; and the court must make a ruling to avoid confusion. The brief also argues that compelling educators to harm trans students will harm educators and that forcing them to discriminate against or harm their students runs counter to the teaching profession.
In submitting the amicus brief, AFT President Randi Weingarten said:
“As educators, we believe every child deserves to feel safe at school. Gavin Grimm is just a kid who wants to be treated like any other. He deserves nothing less, and educators stand with Gavin and every other child seeking the right to live their lives free from bullying, harassment and bigotry. When any of our children feel threatened or unsafe, we will protect them. That is who we are. The need for the Supreme Court to act is only magnified by the Trump administration’s decision to side with bigotry and roll back protections for transgender students. The court now has an opportunity to right an egregious wrong and stand for freedom and equality.”

"Jeff Sessions must immediately resign if he knowingly and purposefully misled the American people during his confirmation hearing. Sessions is the chief law enforcement officer of the United States, and he, more than others, should understand the consequences of lying or misrepresenting, particular while under oath. This is the latest in a series of egregious allegations concerning connections between Trump campaign and administration officials and Russia. The people deserve a full and independent investigation into all of these allegations."

AFT Reacts to Trump’s Speech
 
WASHINGTON— Statement from American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten in response to President Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress:
 
"While President Trump's rhetoric was more presidential—including, finally, a denunciation of hate—his agenda remained unchanged: cutting taxes for the wealthy, ripping healthcare away from millions of Americans, seeing education as a commodity that can be voucherized or privatized, and blaming immigrant communities for all our country’s challenges. He failed to lift up public education or even mention the role of higher education in preparing kids for the jobs of today and tomorrow. And he’s taken the slogans of the labor movement by calling for hiring and buying American without offering real details on how to create good middle-class jobs. There continues to be a big difference between what President Trump says and what he does. 
"With all the good our public schools are doing, it was disappointing that the president couldn’t lift up any of them—like the school I saw today in Peoria, Ill., where teachers, their union, and Republicans and Democrats are finding common ground to make sure kids can learn the skills they need to find good jobs and move this community forward."
